Andrew Markus has performed professionally on several instruments in many musical
genres for more than 25 years. He has performed Classical, Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Salsa, Brazilian, Greek, Free Improvisation, Japanese, Celtic, Folk, East European, Klezmer and Native American Flute in Europe, Asia, the South Pacific, and the
United States.

Andrew Markus performs and records many of his own compositions. The Anchorage Civic Orchestra and the Mat-Su Community Band have performed his large ensemble works.

Biographical Statement
Andrew Markus Bishko, MM was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1960, and grew up studying flute and piano in the Western Classical tradition.
As an undergraduate at Northwestern University, his interests turned to literature and languages. After receiving his B.A. in Humanities, Markus lived in Italy for 2 years-first as a producer of children's puppet theater in Sardinia then as a childcare tutor in Rome, where he studied ceramic sculpture and art history. He returned to music to fund his travel as an improvising street musician.
Upon his return to the U.S.A., Markus continued to travel, perform and record with SATTA, a reggae/world-beat band in the States, Europe, East Asia, and the South Pacific. During this period he composed, arranged and recorded in world-beat styles, and gigged with various salsa, afro-pop and blues bands.
After moving to Alaska in 1990, Andrew Markus developed a residential music therapy program with chronically mentally ill adults, as well as individual work with emotionally disturbed and developmentally disabled adolescents. The American Association for Music Therapy published his paper on this work, and Markus presented at the AAMT national conference in 1994.
At New England Conservatory, Andrew Markus received his Master's degree in Third Stream Studies-- a program based on extensive multicultural ear training and development of personal style through improvisation. Among the extraordinary experiences at NEC were flute studies with Abby Rabinovitz, Gaspar Hoyos, and John Heiss; development of personal style with Ran Blake; Jazz improvisation with John McNeil; free improvisation with Scott Sandvik and Masashi Haradi; theory and composition with Joseph Maneri and George Russell.
Andrew Markus is especially indebted to the mentorship of Hankus Netsky in his rediscovery of klezmer music. In 1996 he released "Markus Bishko & The Alaska Klezmer Band." "Freylakhs for Two-The Alaska Klezmer Duo" (with pianist Alexander Zlatkovski) was released in 2004. The National Flute Association invited Markus to perform klezmer flute in the Gala Opening Concert of their 1999 Atlanta Convention.
From 1997 to 2005, Andrew Markus taught Music, Humanities, and Italian classes at Matanuska-Susitna College and the University of Alaska-Anchorage, where he was involved extensively in developing listening skills-based music curriculum and methodologically-based multi-cultural humanities curriculum.
While maintaining a vibrant performance, recording, and composition career, Andrew Markus has devoted his creativity to the art of teaching music. He has built a successful private studio maintaining the ideals of individualized instruction addressing the musical needs and desires of each student. His students are free to choose a variety of instruments & subjects, (flute, saxophone, piano, recorder, Native American flute, accordion, theory, composition, improvisation, and more), styles (Classical, jazz/dixieland, blues, gospel, klezmer, Celtic, American folk, original songs & compositions, popular, Jewish, Christian, etc.) and modes of instruction (private lessons, group classes, classical ensembles, bands…)-and then challenged to reach their full potential.
Andrew Markus continues to grow and develop his own musical interests. Recently he has adopted the Native American flute and applied his improvisational experience to performing, recording and teaching with this instrument.
